Margery Potter Obituary

Margery E. Potter, 86, passed away August 15, 2019 at Carthage Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing where she had been a resident.

Born on February 7, 1933 in Appleton, Wisconsin, daughter of Rudolf and Gladys M. DeLong Kanik, she attended school in Appleton, Wisconsin and Black River.

Following school she married Sherwood Potter, of Black River, on January 25, 1948 the couple resided in Black River. She became a beautician in 1963 graduating from Watertown School of Cosmetology and opened a beautician shop in her home. In 1967 she graduated from Watertown School of Business and worked for St. Regis Paper Co., in DeFeriet, as a secretary. Her marriage ended in divorce in 1970. She moved to Ilion, NY where she attended Herkimer Community College for a year. In 1971 she returned to Black River and worked as a manager for Mercer’s Convenient Store for two years. In 1973 she went to work for Black River Elementary School as a secretary until she retired in 1989. She moved to the LeRay St. Apartment’s in Watertown in the early 90’s.

She was a charter member and secretary for the Black River Ambulance Squad, president of the non- teaching union, and member of the Black River Rebecca's.

Among her survivors are a son and daughter in law, Kevin D. and Kim Potter, Austin, TX, two daughters and a son in law, Jacqueline E. Boomer, Owego, NY, Cheryl M. and Landis Fuller, Evans Mills, a brother, Robert Kanik, Liverpool, 7 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by a son, James Potter who died in 1995 and a brother James Kanik.

Arrangements are with the Bruce Funeral Home, Black River. It was her wish to be cremated. A graveside service will be held in the Black River Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
