Myrtle Benway Obituary

Myrtle B. Benway, of 424 Mill St., Watertown passed October 20, 2018 at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse following injuries sustained in a vehicle accident.

A calling hour will be held 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday, October 29 at the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home 117 N. Massey St., Watertown. 

A prayer service will begin at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home followed by a Funeral Mass at 3 p.m., at Sacred Heart Church with her nephew, Rev. Timothy G. Canaan, officiating.

Following the services she will be cremated and a graveside service will take place  2 p.m. Tuesday, October 30 in Calvary Cemetery.

She was born on January 24, 1926 in Watertown, daughter of Ambrose T. and Hazel D. Coscomb Canaan.

She attended school in Watertown and following school she worked at J.J. Newberry’s Department Store as a waitress for fourteen years, part time at Crossroads Diner and various local restaurants and sold tickets at the Town Theater. 

She married Earl Benway on October 27, 1973 at Sacred Heart Church.  The couple resided in Watertown.  He passed away June 9, 1994.

Myrtle has resided at Skyline Apartment since 1991.  She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, former officer at the Eagles Club, and member of the Pocahontas Auxiliary in Watertown.

Among her survivors are her daughter, Ambrosia M. “Amy” Van Epps, Hopewell, VA, a grandson, Scott Van Epps, three great grandchildren, Justin Van Epps, Zachary Evans and Taylor Evans, a sister, Catherine M. Burke, Rochester, two brothers, Perley E. Canaan, Iowa,  and Timothy C. Canaan and his companion, Sheila Marie, Watertown, several nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her son in law, Craig Van Epps, a granddaughter, Amy Jo Evans, three brothers, Kenneth, Francis and Gerald Canaan, nine sisters, Patricia Ann Canaan, Dorothy Canaan, Emma LaCroix, Bernice Wilson, Opal Canaan, Eleanor Callahan, Judith Peck, Eunice Jeffers and Purwillia Weideman.
