Obituary

WATERTOWN--Dr. Abram J. Zehr, 75, of 23629 RTE 12, Watertown, passed away at home following a brief illness, on Monday, March 14, 2011. Dr. Zehr was born October 26, 1935 in Alden, NY, the son of the late Harold and Magdelena Zehr. He was a graduate of Mannsville-Manor Central School in 1954 and received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University in 1960. Upon graduating, he went into practice with Dr. Herbert Marks in Lowville, NY and later practiced in Mexico, NY. After completing two years' service as an officer in the army stationed in Chicago, Ill. and receiving an honorable discharge from the military, Dr. Zehr moved to Watertown, NY where he opened his own practice and remained until his death. On December 30, 1961 he married Ardeth Hulbert at the Lowville First Methodist Church. Dr. Zehr was a member of the Beta Chapter of Omega Tau Sigma, a national honorary veterinary fraternity, and the Jefferson County Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. Zehr was a horse racing enthusiast who also enjoyed reading, gardening, cooking, and card games. He was also a great fan of trivia and had a wealth of knowledge on every subject imaginable. He loved his grandchildren very much and was always ready to entertain them with a story or a joke. Dr. Zehr is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ardeth; three daughters: Marcia Kall and her husband, Brian, of Sackets Harbor, NY; Linda Matuszak and her husband, Craig, of Gansevoort, NY; Janet Rice of Pittsfield, MA; one son: Mark Zehr and his wife, Tina, of Dexter, NY. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Matthew and Sarah Kall, Michelle and Kristen Matuszak, Emily and Patrick Rice, and Lexi Zehr; a sister: Oletta Miller of Hesston, KS; two brothers: Duane Zehr of Henderson, NY and Kenneth Zehr and his wife, Audrey, of Virginia. He is also survived by several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Earl Zehr. Friends may call at the Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter, NY on Friday, March 18 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral will be held on Saturday, March 19 at 11 AM at the Brownville United Methodist Church. Donations may be made in his honor to the Brownville United Methodist Church or the Jefferson County Hospice.
