BLACK RIVER, N.Y. — Dr. Anthony Mattis, 63, left this world to be with the Father on Feb. 7, 2016, after a long and brave battle with cancer. He died at home in Black River with his long-time friend and caretaker, Barbara, at his side. He has left a legacy of healing and touched many lives as a board certified emergency physician. Born in Erie, PA, and raised in Rochester, NY, Tony attended St. John Fisher College and the University of Rochester for medical school. He then completed a residency in emergency medicine in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Dr. Mattis began his medical career at the House of the Good Samaritan in Watertown, NY, in 1984 and was EMS Medical Director for a year as well as staff n the Emergency Department. He had worked in several Emergency Departments throughout the country including time in the Indian Health Service where he was sent to Red Lake, MN. He finished his public Health Service Scholarship obligation serving in an underserved area in Kingstree, SC as well as many states in between. He returned to the Watertown area in 1997 and worked at the Carthage Area Hospital Emergency Department until he retired in 2007 on a medical disability. He enjoyed traveling, target shooting, flying and he proudly achieved obtaining his instrument rating as a private plot. All are welcome to pay their final respects to Dr. Mattis at his funeral Mass 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 210 LeRay St., Black River, NY, with internment in Black River Cemetery immediately following the Mass. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the St. Paul's Catholic Church in Black River and as always your prayers are appreciated. He will be missed by all whose lives he touched!
