Obituary

Bernard W. Burke, 101, formerly of Dexter passed away Friday morning at Hospice at Ellis Farm with his daughter at his side. Bernard was born April 30, 1915 in Fulton, NY the son of Arthur and Edythe LaRock Burke. He attended Evans Mills and Dexter Schools and graduated from Watertown High School. Bernard served in the US Army during World War II serving in the Asiatic-Pacific with the 691st Engineering Base Equipment Co. He was honorably discharged as Technician 4th grade. Prior to entering the Army, he married Marion M. Marks on July 2, 1940 at the Rectory of All Saints Church in Chaumont by Fr. Edward Pierce. Bernard worked at the Dexter Sulphite Mill, DeGrasse Development Power Co. and retired from NYSDOT in 1975 as a welder/ pipefitter. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Church of Dexter, Elks, Knights of Columbus, Smith Savage Post American Legion #583, V.F.W., Rustic Golf Club and founding member of Frontier Housing of Dexter. He is survived by a daughter Mrs. Lise (James) Montrois of Brownville and step grandchildren: David Montrois of Talahassee,Fl., Sherry Lashway of Jupiter, FL., Christie Powers of Clayton and a nephew Lee Burke of Syracuse. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Marion in 2001 and his granddaughter Karen Montrois in 2015, a brother Arthur Burke. Funeral services will be Monday 11:00 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church of Brownville with Fr. Michael Gaffney officiating. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery with Military Honors. Calling hours will be Sunday from 2-4 P.M. at the Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter. Donations may be made to Hospice 1398 Gotham St. Watertown, NY 13601.
