Obituary

Byron "Doc" McAvoy, age 89, passed away on Monday, June 30th, 2014. Byron was born October 21, 1924 in Clayton, New York, to Byron G. McAvoy Sr., and Bertha M. McAvoy. Dr. McAvoy is preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Verna Thompson McAvoy; daughter, Carol McAvoy Hunter; his parents, and his siblings. After attending grade school and high school in Clayton, Byron graduated from Cornell University in 1946. He practiced veterinary medicine in Hammond, New York for 50 years. He also operated a clinic in Ogdensburg, New York for many years. He was very active in the community of Hammond. Upon retirement, Byron and Verna spent their winters in Green Valley, Arizona. He enjoyed traveling, music, gardening, meeting new people, and he especially enjoyed working in his wood shop. He became a very talented woodworker in his later years, and he loved to share his clocks and other beautiful creations with family and friends. Byron is survived by daughters Ellen McAvoy of Canastota, New York, and Reva McAvoy de Flamand of Salt Lake City, Utah, as well as three grandsons, and two great-grandchildren. His family would like to extend their gratitude to those who so graciously and lovingly cared for our father at The Country Manor Nursing Centre in Carthage, New York. A private graveside service in South Hammond will be held. In lieu of flowers, his family requests that any donations be sent to your local Humane Society.
