Obituary

June 1 Doris A. Hitchen of Harbour Heights, Sackets Harbor died June 1, 2010 in Mercy of NNY. She was born November 20, 1918 in Hartly, Delaware. She was born in the same house, the same room and bed as her mother was. Her parents were Arlington and Alda Short Price. After her father was killed in a car accident she and her mother went to live with her mother's parents. She attended a one room schoolhouse constructed by her great grandfather for the neighboring farm children. She graduated from Caesar Rodney High School and was employed as a secretary to the Comptroller of the State of Delaware. There she met her future husband Joseph T. Hitchen who was Auditor for the State. They were married February 14, 1947. They moved to Cranston Heights, Delaware where she worked as office manager in her husband's insurance company. They moved to North Cape May, N.J. in 1968. Her husband died in 1972. In 1982 she moved to Sackets Harbor, N.Y. She was very active in volunteer work, always helping anyone in need. She was treasurer of the Sackets Harbor Fireman's Auxiliary for many years, member of Christ Episcopal Church in Sackets Harbor, worked for Pure Water for Life. She is survived by a step-daughter and her husband, Eleanor and David Nellis of Sackets Harbor, a grandson and his wife David L. and Karen Nellis of Sackets Harbor, a granddaughter and her husband, Amy and James Gowan of Watertown, a great grandson and his wife, John and Kerstin Nellis of Germany, and a great granddaughter Beth Nellis of Syracuse, and a great great grandson Jacob Nellis of Germany. She will be cremated and there will be no calling hours. A memorial reception will be held in the Community Room of Harbour Heights from 2 to 4 on June 26, 2010. Donations may be made to the Sackets Harbor Ambulance or Hay Memorial Library in Sackets Harbor. Arrangements are with Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter.
