Douglas Frank Hinman, the son of Frank Hinman and Eva Frasier, was born December 11, 1923, in Malone, New York.
He graduated from the Franklin Academy in Malone in 1941 and shortly thereafter relocated to Central Street in Watertown, NY with his parents and family. He graduated from the Remington Institute and worked as a machinist at the New York Airbrake until enlisting in the Army. He served from 1942 to 1946 and participated in the D Day invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes. After the war, he returned to Watertown and the New York Airbrake and worked there until retiring in 1986. He met Gertrude Bessie O'Connor at a 1947 New Year's Eve party and married her the following year. Shortly thereafter, they moved to 407 Pine Street, Glen Park. Gertrude passed away from cancer on July 16, 2001, and Douglas never remarried, stating, "She was the love of my life, and once you have the best, you can't do any better". They are survived by three children: Michael D. and Wendy Delaney Hinman of Champion, NY, Joan Hodkinson of Vancouver, Washington State, and Stephen and Pam Cornell Hinman of Potsdam, NY.
They had a total of 14 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Douglas served actively as a member of the Glen Park Fire Department and Village Board. He was the Committee Chairman of Boy Scout Troop 2 Brownville for over decade and served as President of Brown Park Housing until his death. He was a kind and generous man who worked hard, raised a family, had a loving wife, and served his community. Arrangements have been made through the Johnson Funeral Home in Dexter. There will be no calling hours. A church mass will be held on June 24, 11AM at the Immaculate Conception in Brownville followed by a graveside service in Dexter Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, it is asked that the donations be made in his name to the Glen Park Fire Department or the Longhouse Council, Boy Scouts of America in Mattydale NY.
