WATERTOWN, N.Y. — Edward R. Gaus, 81, of 1325 Loomus Dr., passed Monday, Oct. 21, at his home in the company of his wife and children. A funeral Mass will be said 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with his brother, Rev. Monsignor Arnold L. Gaus, officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery. Calling hours are 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at Hart and Bruce Funeral Home. Edward was born Feb. 3, 1932, in Johnstown, Pa., to Carl Gaus Sr. and Margaret Beyer, he graduated from the Johnstown Catholic High School in 1950. He entered the Army and was awarded a number of medals for his honorable service including the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star. He married Mary Giordanelli of Watertown on Sept. 14, 1957, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church with Rev. Dennis Lynch presiding. Among his survivors are his loving wife Mary of 56 years and their five children; Joseph (Cicero), Julie Welch (Dan, Marlboro, MA), James (Mary, Atlanta, GA), John (Jennifer, Watertown, NY) and Jeffrey (Kathleen, Mason, OH). His grandchildren are Michael and Mathew Welch, sons of Julie and Dan, Olivia, Andrew and Emma Gaus, children of Jeffrey and Katie, Abigail (deceased), Edward, Winifred, David and Anne Gaus, children of John and Jennifer, and Joshua Gaus, son of James and Mary. His siblings are Carl Gaus, Jr. (Dorothy, Pittsburgh, PA), John Gaus (deceased), James Gaus (deceased), Bede Gaus (deceased), Mary Basset (Harold, Waynesboro, PA), Raymond Gaus (June, Rotterdam, NY), Rev. Monsignor Arnold Gaus (Crescent, PA) and Robert "Buck" Gaus (Barbara, Brecksville, OH) Edward demonstrated a tireless work ethic to provide for his family until his retirement from civilian employment at Fort Drum in February 1994. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and gardening. He enjoyed his life with his wife, children and grandchildren until the time of death.
