Eleanor Catherine Raynor Burns, age 92 of Dexter, passed away Wednesday 10:10 a.m. at the home of her daughter in Dexter. Eleanor was born September 29, 1917 in Glen Ridge, N.J. the daughter of Francis and Josephine Matthews Raynor. She graduated Prep School at Centenary Collegiate Institute of Hackettstown, N.J. in 1933, and Cornell University in 1937 with a BA and in 1939 with a BA in Law. After law school she worked in the law department of Postal Telegraph Cable Co. in New York City. She studied Russian in the evenings and took courses in the summer of 1944 to prepare for overseas government service. In 1945, near the end of the World War II she joined the State Department as a Vice-Consul stationed in Vienna, Austria. She then joined the legal division of the office of Military Government for Bavaria, in Munich, Germany, where she remained until 1951. In 1951 she came to Watertown went to work filling in as law librarian for Attorney Luke Burns. She was a sole practitioner in Watertown until 1956, when she moved to Binghamton, N.Y. for two years to practice. On August 29, 1958 she married Luke A. Burns Jr.at Tawson, Md. And returned to Watertown as his law partner, until his death in 1971. She practiced alone under the name of Kinkley and Burns until 1978, when she became counsel to Giles, Maloney, Marsh, Swartz & Goodwin. She continued as to Giles, Marsh, Goodwin & Stone P.C. when that firm was formed in 1984. She slowed her practice after the Giles firm merged with Hiscock & Barclay in 1987 and retired fully in 1990. Mrs. Burns was past President of Jefferson County League of Women Voters, member of College Women's Club, Council of Social Agencies, Fresh Air Fund, March of Dimes, First Presbyterian Church, Thousand Islands Girl Scout Council, American Association of University Women, and Trustee of Dexter Free Library, member of Jefferson County Bar Assoc. and American Bar Assoc. She is survived by a daughter and her husband Catherine Burns Quencer and William J. Quencer of Dexter, granddaughter Elizabeth C. Quencer and grandson Luke B. Quencer both of Dexter. She also has a sister Jean R. Mase of Charlestown, R.I. and nephews Robert R. Mase of Charleston, R.I. and Laurence Mase of Southampton, MA and grandnieces Carolyn and Meredith Mase of Southampton, MA. A graveside service will be held Monday 4:00 P.M. at Glenwood Cemetery, Watertown. Calling hours will be Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 at Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter.
