Frederick John Bates age 73 of Lady Lake Florida and formerly of Philadelphia and the Jefferson County area passed away January 21st at Lady Lake, Florida. Frederick was born March 29, 1933 in Cape Vincent, the son of Malcolm and Edna Babcock Bates. He graduated from Cape Vincent High School in 1950. He attended Canton Agricultural & Technical Institute in Canton from 1951-1951. He served in the Army from 1951-1954 with ASA 8609 based in the Philippines Islands during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant. He was employed by Ford Motor Co. in Buffalo, N.Y. and New York Bell Telephone in Watertown, N.Y. He married Jane Marie Majo in Brownville, N.Y. in 1955. He operated the family farm in Cape Vincent until June of 1962. He joined the New York State Police in September 1962, serving Northern N.Y. in K Troop, B Troop and retired from D Troop in June of 1982. He was Co-Owner of True Value Ace Hardware in Chaumont, N.Y. with his brother Robert Bates. He graduated from SUNY Canton with an AAS Criminal Justice in 1971. He became employed by Immigration and Naturalization Service at Thousand Islands Bridge, as Inspector. Detailed to Bangkok, Thailand to interview refugee applicants from Cambodia, Viet Nam and Laos. Served 3 years at the INS Pre-clearance Port of Entry in Hamilton, Bermuda and worked part-time at the NASA tracking station on St. David's Island, Bermuda. Promoted to Immigration Intelligence Officer in the Denver District for 6 years. Promoted to Supervisory Immigration Instructor at the Federal Law Enforcement Academy in Artesia, New Mexico and retired from that position in March of 2001. He is survived by children: Susan J. Ciminelli of Lakeview, N.Y.; Nancy J. Bates of Camp Hill, PA; Joanne F. Garcia of Azusa, CA; Janet M. Heady of Cape Vincent, N.Y. and John Bates of Weston, Florida. Grandchildren: Robert and Genevieve Longtin of Lakeview, N.Y.; Caitlin Humphrey of Brownville, N.Y.; Olivia and Clark Heady of Cape Vincent, N.Y. He is also survived by brothers and sisters: Malcolm Bates of Canton, N.Y.; Elizabeth Millard of Aurora, N.Y.; Alta Bates of Cape Vincent, N.Y.; Kenneth Bates of Dexter, N.Y. and Robert Bates of Chaumont, N.Y. He was predeceased by Brother Donald Bates and a sister Christine Mason. A memorial service will be Friday, January 26th at 10:00 am at St. Georges's Episcopal Church in Lady Lake, Florida. Burial will be following the memorial service in Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida. A local memorial service will be held Saturday February 3rd at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Brownville.
