George W.
Stevenson
September 9, 1925 – January 3, 2016
George W. Stevenson, 90, of Watertown, passed on January 7, 2016 at his home with his family by his side.
Born September 9, 1925 in the Town of Antwerp, the son of the late Wellington and Mary Lavere Stevenson, he was the youngest of 10 siblings, all of whom predeceased him.
He joined the United States Army in November of 1945. He served as a parachutist in the 11 Airborne Division in Sapporo Japan. He was honorably discharged in May of 1947.
He married Teresa Hall on September 27, 1949 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Antwerp. George and Teresa resided in the Town of Pamelia, until moving to the City of Watertown in 1983.
Mr. Stevenson knew all the area garages and mechanics through his work as a Snap-On Tools salesperson in the late 1960's. He worked as a mechanic for several dealerships, and worked as service manager at Taylor International for about 20 years.
George enjoyed flying small aircraft and snowmobiling. He especially loved auto racing. He briefly owned race cars which competed at Watertown Speedway and Edgewood Speedway in the 1950's. Since 1988, George was actively involved in his family's racing, first with karts and later with race cars. He enjoyed a great summer of racing in 2015.
His survivors are a son and daughter in law, Jeff and Debra Stevenson, Watertown, and three grandchildren, Alyssa, Andrew and Tyler. He loved spending time with his grandchildren.
His wife of 67 years, Teresa, passed on October 11, 2014.
His son, Paul W. Stevenson, passed on April 16, 2013. George was especially proud of Paul's accomplishments as a State Department Foreign Service Officer who provided diplomatic and humanitarian efforts in Africa.
