Obituary

Jeanne E. Pitkin, 84, of East Grove Street Dexter, passed away at her home on the morning of February 12th after a brief illness. Jeanne was born February 9, 1931, the daughter of Archie and Agnes (Seaver) Ruttan of Dexter. She graduated from Dexter High School in 1948 as the class Valedictorian. After graduation, she attended House of Good Samaritan Nursing Program where she obtained her degree as a Registered Nurse (RN) in 1951. She worked many years for Dr. Harold Livingston at his family practice in the Village of Dexter and then went on to work at the Samaritan Keep Home, where she was the head supervisory nurse of the 4th floor. Jeanne married Lyle A. Pitkin of Glen Park on November 19, 1951. Lyle worked at the Boise Cascade Paper Mill in Brownville and retired in 1987 after 43 years of service. Lyle predeceased her on December 3, 2001. Jeanne also graduated from the State University of New York-College of Technology in 1981 with a Bachelors Degree in Nursing. She then went on to obtain her Master Degree in Education from Potsdam College in 1987, while also taking graduate courses at Syracuse University and St. Lawrence University. During this period of time, Jeanne also went to work as a Nursing Instructor for BOCES where she taught nursing to many classes of high school students looking to become Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN's). In 1987, she went to work for Care Givers in Watertown, NY as a Registered Nurse (RN) Supervisor. While still working for Care Givers, she also started a career teaching in 1989 at the Watertown Correctional Facility, where she taught reading. She later transferred to the Cape Vincent Correctional Facility, where she retired in December 1999 to care for her ill husband. She still continued to work for Care Givers until her retirement on January 23, 2015 due to ill health. Jeanne enjoyed bowling, playing darts (winning many tournaments), playing the piano and several other musical instruments, and was also and avid sports fan. She loved attending local high school sporting events to watch both her son and grandchildren play. She was aslo known for always keeping score in the crowd and finding the best parking space at the local sporting event to park her white Caddy. She also played the piano at the Annual Dexter High School Alumni Banquet for over 50 years. Jeanne is survived by her 2 sons and their wives- Mr. David (Sarah) Pitkin,Dexter, and Mr. Darrin (Cathy) Pitkin, Brownville; her 2 daughters and their husbands-Mrs. Debra (Anthony) Powell, Dexter, and Mrs. Dawn (Eugene) Remington, Brownville; and her sister Betty Pierce, Watertown. She is also survived by seven grandchildren- Daniel (Alexa) Powell, Watertown, Derek Powell and Amber Klusacek, Brownville, Austin Pitkin, Brownville, Tanner Pitkin, Dexter, Nolan, Katie, and Rhea Pitkin, Brownville, and 1 great grandson- Zachary Powell. Calling hours will be held on Sunday (February 15th) from 1pm-3pm at the Johnson Funeral Home. A 3pm funeral/memorial service will be held at the funeral home directly following the calling hours on Sunday with the Reverend Gail Parsons officiating. A spring burial is planned in Dexter Cemetery. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
