Obituary

Jerry E. Austin, 95, of Watertown, passed Saturday, March 26 at the Samaritan Medical Center.

There will be no calling hours or funeral service.  Jerry donated his body to the Anatomical Gift Program at Upstate University in Syracuse.

He was born on May 5, 1920 in Watertown, NY, son of Vernon and Helen LaPatra Austin.

He entered the US Navy on February 5, 1940 and served during WWII.  He was honorably discharged on February 9, 1946 as Chief Signalman.  He received the Asiatic Pacific Medal with two Silver Stars and three Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Medal with 1 Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, and American Defense Medal with 1 Bronze Star, American Theatre Medal and Victory Medal.  He then served in the US Naval Reserves up until he retired on May 5, 1980.

He worked at St. Reis Paper Co. in DeFeriet for thirty three years as a paper maker.

He married Sandra J. Cloonan on June 12, 1971 in Watertown at the Emmanuel Congregational Church.  The couple resided in Watertown. Sandy worked for Hopkins Homes in Watertown for several years.

She and her husband owned a cottage in Guffins Bay on Lake Ontario since 1977 and enjoyed summers there up until 2010.  The couple enjoyed hosting family gatherings at their cottage.

He was an avid golfer and former member of the Willowbrook Golf Club and Rustic Golf Course.  In his late eighty's he got a "hole in one" on the second hole at the Rustic Golf Course with his step daughter Lori Adams.  He was also a former member of the Watertown American Legion,  he loved to make things, woodworking, reading and cross word puzzles.

Among his survivors are his wife Sandra J. Austin, Watertown; six children, 5 step children, a brother, Graydon Clark, CA; several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
