Obituary

WATERTOWN, N.Y.  —  JoAnn Croyle, 72, of 421 Cross St., formerly of Gettysburg, PA, passed away peacefully at the Hospice of Jefferson County Residence on Gotham St, Watertown on Saturday, June 10, 2017 JoAnn was born in Sebring, Florida, on Sept. 30, 1944, the daughter of Jack and Ann Boyanski Croyle. Following her father's Army service, the family returned to the north country and settled in Sackets Harbor, later relocating to Adams Center. JoAnn attended school in Sackets Harbor, Adams Center and then Immaculate Heart Academy in Watertown. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph Community in Watertown in 1960 and earned her high school diploma from IHA while in the novitiate in Ogdensburg, NY.  JoAnn continued her education at Mater Dei College in Ogdensburg receiving her final profession in June 1966 when she was given the name of Sister Theophane. In later years, the Sisters were allowed to revert to their given name and she was then known as Sister JoAnn Croyle. She received a BS Ed in reading from SUNY Potsdam and completed her education at  Nazareth College in Rochester where she earned her Masters Degree in Education for elementary grades. She taught at St. Josephs, Massena 1963-65 and 1971-73; St. Agnes, Lake Placid 1965-68; St. Mary's, Ticonderoga 1968-69; Holy Family, Watertown 1969-70 and 77-79; Holy Name, Tupper Lake 1970-71; St. Augustines, Peru, NY 1973-77 where she was Sister Superior and teacher;  St. James Gouverneur, 1979-85; Trinity Catholic, Massena 1985-88 where she was Sister Superior and teacher. After a retreat at Ain Karim in Fairfield, PA, JoAnn received an Indult of Secularization in 1991 and left the religious community. She relocated to Gettysburg where she taught at St. Francis Xavier School, was a student advocate after her retirement and also employed by Dobbin House in the Gift Shop. JoAnn was an accomplished pianist, artist, cook and enjoyed all types of crafts.  She loved all of God's creations especially animals. JoAnn is survived by one sister Gloria Peluso, Watertown; a nephew Ken Oatridge and grand nephew Sawyer Oatridge of Carthage; a niece Patricia Oatridge, Adams; an aunt, Ann Boyanski of Dexter; and several cousins. Arrangements are with the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home, 117 N. Massey St., Watertown, NY. At JoAnn's request, there will be no calling hours and a funeral Mass will be said at the convenience of the family. The family expresses their deepest appreciation for the care JoAnn received over the past year at The Hospice Residence where she was treated with the utmost respect and allowed to pass peacefully on her own terms.
