Leonard J. Coughlin, age 93 of Jewel Dr. Watertown, passed away at his home Wednesday afternoon.
Leonard was born January 24, 1921 in Dexter, N.Y. the son of Francis G. and Harriett M. Kitto Coughlin. He graduated from Dexter High School, University of Louisville, Louisville, KY., Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Mich., Paper and Paper Coating Technology, Langston Corp., Camden, N.J. Paper Industry Machinery, University of Maine Oreno, ME. Pulp and Paper Engineering, Gortham Institute, N.H. Paper Industry Economics and Forecasting.
He was employed at the Dexter Sulphite Pulp and Paper Co., Dexter, N.Y. as Control Technician from 1939 to 1942.
He married Mary Louise Kirch on August 14, 1942.
Leonard served in the US Army from 1942 to 1946 and was discharged as a Captain and Tank Commander, "C." Co. 785the Tank Battalion serving in Phillipine Liberation Campaign, Ie Shima and Okinawa.
After service he returned to Dexter Sulphite as Control Chemist and Tour Supervisor from 1946-1948.
Technical Assistant to the Managing Director, Irving Pulp and Paper Co. St. John N.B. and Dexter Sulphite. From 49-50. General Superintendent, Dexter Sulphite from 1950-1953. Technical Sales and Service Rep to the paper industry and Manager of Commercial Development, Penick and Ford Ltd. Cedar Rapids, Iowa 1953-1970. Manager of Technical Service, Cyprus Industrial Minerals Co. Princeton, N.J. 1971-1976. V.P. General Manager, Sales and Marketing, Industrial Minerals and Chemicals, Freeport, McMoRan Global Resources Co. N.Y. N.Y. 1976-1986. Retired in 1986 and formed Frontenac Consultants to the Paper Industry.
He was a member of Technical Assoc. of Pulp and Paper Industry, Paper Industry Management Assoc., American Society of Chemists and Engineers, Canadian Pulp and Paper Assoc.,American Society for Coating Technology, American Plastics Assoc., Chairman and Member of SCORE, Watertown, N.Y. Chapter 120, President and Member of Board of Directors, Jefferson Rehabilitation Center, Watertown, N.Y. and Trustee of Dexter Historical Society.
Surviving are: John and Kathy Nardi of Babylon, N.Y., Patrick and Samantha Coughlin , San Diego, California, Erin and Glen Holloell of Homer, Alaska, 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, a brother William Coughlin of Albuqerque, N.M.
He was predeceased by a son Leonard John Coughlin in 1995 and his wife Mary earlier this year.
Funeral services will be December 5th 2014 at the Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter, N.Y. at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Michael Gaffney of Immaculate Conception Church of Brownville officiating.
