Obituary

Margaret Louise Kostyk formerly of County Route 53, Dexter passed away peacefully Monday evening March 9th at Samaritan Keep Home where she had been a resident since February 2008. Special thanks go to Pamela M. Kostyk (Niece) and members of the Sam Keep Home Staff for making the final years of Margaret's life memorable and pleasurable. Margaret is survived by many nieces and nephews. Margaret was born at the family homestead at 409 Brown Street Dexter May 8, 1930. Margaret is the daughter of (Georghie) Joseph and (Zanchirei Veghera) Jennie Vegaira (Costscu) Kostyk. Margaret graduated from Dexter High School with a Regents Diploma in 1947. She went on to graduate from the Watertown School of Commerce in 1948. Besides caring for her mother and maintaining a home for two of her brothers Margaret worked for I.R. Poole in Dexter. She moved on to work for the First National Bank of Dexter in 1962. During her employment with the Dexter bank she was a victim of an armed robbery that netted the robber $6000 cash and took place at the bank in 1970. Margaret triggered the alarm for the sheriff's department and with the assistance of her sister-in-law, Doris Kostyk, provided the authorities a description of the robber, a partial license plate number and vehicle description that enabled the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department to apprehend the robber 1 hour 17 minutes after the robbery. Margaret retired from Key Bank, the successor to the First National Bank of Dexter, in June of 1990. Margaret was a member of the Dexter Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and an avid bowler. She participated in several state wide bowling tournaments. Margaret was an avid gardener always taking pride in the appearance of her family's home; both in the village and on Co. Rte. 53. Margaret always set aside a couple of weeks each year to spend time with her sister Vera and other family members at their favorite vacationing spot at Holls Inn in Inlet, N.Y. Margaret was predeceased by her mother Jennie, father Joseph and 8 brothers and sisters: Mary Kostyk, Doris Melhado, Andrew Kostyk, Theodore Kostyk, Peter Kostyk, Vera Kostyk, Alexander Kostyk, Edith Cole and Nicholas Kostyk (WW II MIA Germany). There will be a calling hour starting at 1PM and a funeral service at 2 PM March 14, 2015 at the Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter. There will be a spring burial in the Dexter Cemetery and at the family's convenience.
