Obituary

Mrs. Maria delPilar Diaz, age 95 of Dexter died September 18, 2009 still receiving the loving care of Angel's Inn of Watertown; where she had resided for 3 years. Maria was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico November 16, 1913 the daughter of Miguel deJesus and Ramona Perez Martinez Vargas. She came to the United States as a young woman, working various jobs in New York City and Annapolis, Maryland. She retired from the New York State facility, Harlem Valley Psychiatric Center in 1972 as a night supervisor after more than 25 years of service. She moved to Dexter in 1985 from Wingdale, N.Y. She was the widow of Jose de Jesus Diaz who died December 23, 1990. She also lived with a friend and devoted companion Evelyn Cooper from 1947 until 1997 that died September 30. 1997. She was also predeceased by sisters Polita, Virginia, Candelaria, and infant sister and brother Sixto, nephew Roy Neff, and nieces Isabel Matiz and Shannon Matiz. Mrs. Diaz is survived by her adopted daughter Mrs. Isabel Matiz and granddaughters Vanessa, Lisa, and Christina Theresa and Linda and their spouses and children. Their only brother, Michael Christopher died in 2002; he is survived by his children and wife Perri. Mrs. Diaz has a large extended family of nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and great grand nieces and nephews. They live in Annapolis, Baltimore, Crownsville, Glen Burnie, Edgewater, Inglende, Pasadena,Ridgely, Severn and Towson, Maryland, Bridgeville. Delaware, Brooklyn, N.Y. Ridgefield Park, N.J. Grier, S. Carolina, Memphis, TN. And Texas. Maria loved the Sacred Heart, Saint Anthony, Saint Jude, Saint Elizabeth Seton and Dexter. She served as Eucharistic Minister and member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Dexter for many years. She loved gardening, dancing, bowling, knitting, her family and friends and Lawrence Welk show. The family would like to thank all her neighbors, friends, service personnel and especially all of the Angels at Angel's Inn who were assisted by Hospice of Jefferson County the past two weeks. Funeral services will be Friday September 25th at 11:00 A.M. at Immaculate Conception Church, Brownville. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. at the Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter. Donations may be made to Immaculate Conception Church of Brownville or Angel's Inn of Watertown.
