Obituary

Marjorie S. Wendell, 96, formerly of Henderson and currently a resident at the Diamond Hill Nursing & Rehab Center in Troy, passed September 6, 2016 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy. Arrangements are with the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home, Watertown. A graveside service will be Noon Friday, September 9th at Brookside Cemetery. The family will host a celebration of her life following the burial at the Henderson Community Center from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Marjorie  was born on September 19, 1919 in Watertown, the daughter of David Irland and Annabel Grace (Clark) Stadden. She attended high school in Milton, PA and in 1936 graduated at the age of 16.  In 1940 she graduated from Bucknell University with a Bachelors Degree in Education.

Following school she worked briefly at the hospital in Watertown and as a substitute teacher at a country school in Milton, PA before returning to Watertown, where she worked for a local insurance company and then for the hospital again.

She married John Allen in 1941.  The couple had two children, Warren and James Allen. The marriage ended in divorce.

She then married Roger S. Wendell on June 5, 1946 in South Weymouth, Mass.  The couple resided in Henderson and Henderson Harbor the rest of their lives where she was a homemaker. The couple was married for 56 years, Mr. Wendell passed in 2002.

Marjorie was a lifelong "rock hound", and was a charter member and long time treasurer of the Jefferson County Rock and Mineral Club. She was a founding member of the Black River Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club,, a Girl Scout leader for many years, talented photographer, artist, cook and seamstress.  She was an avid camper, canoeist and outdoor explorer with her husband Roger.

Among her survivors are a daughter, Sylvia Wendell, Menands, NY; three sons and three daughters-in-law, Charles "Chip" Wendell and Sabina Dowell, Andover, MA, Warren and Eleanor Allen, Watertown, James "Jim" Allen, NYC, Diana Wendell, Liverpool; a half sister, Carol Troxell, Milton, PA; seven grandchildren, David, Rachel, Crispin, and Avery Wendell, Daniel, Aaron and Zachary Allen; 10 nieces and nephews.

A son Gordon Wendell passed Feb. 20, 1997, a daughter Joan Allen died in infancy, and two brothers, Warren and Richard Stadden also passed before her.
