Mary Lou Combs, 67, of Black River, NY, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2024, at Samaritan Medical Center after a brief battle with lung cancer. Born on October 4, 1957, in Gouverneur, NY, she was the daughter of Lois (Carr) LaForty.
Mary Lou graduated from Watertown High School and began her career working at Fay's Drugstore. After marrying Rick A. Combs on August 5, 1989, at his parents' home in Black River, the couple made Black River their lifelong home. As they started a family, Mary Lou dedicated herself to raising her children and volunteered actively at Black River Elementary School, where she served as PTO President. She also worked at Video Loft in Black River, babysat for many local families, and most recently served as a lunch monitor at Black River Elementary until June of 2024.
Known for her love of travel, especially Disney trips with family, Mary Lou was also an avid NASCAR fan, affectionately called "NASCAR Granny" by those who knew her and Gega to her grandchildren. She was one of her grandchildrens biggest fans and was often found in the pool area cheering them on. She cherished gatherings with family and friends, often enjoying card games and barbecues.
Mary Lou is survived by her beloved husband, Rick A. Combs of Black River; her children, Leigh and Jason Badalato of Watertown, Shawn Combs of Buffalo, Jessica Combs of Watertown, and Corey and Sohyeon Combs of East Windsor, NJ; her cherished grandchildren, JayJay, Chloe, and Ahyoung; her mother, Lois LaForty of Watertown; her brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Mary LaForty of Brownville; brother-in-law, Patrick McCann of Geneva; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Debra McCann.
Arrangements are with Bruce Funeral Home, Black River. Burial will take place at Black River Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
