Obituary

Dr. Nicholas J. Rice, age 83 of Old Town Springs Rd. Chaumont, passed away Friday evening at his home. Nicholas was born March 16, 1928 in Jersey City, New Jersey the son of Joseph and Mae Mactutis Rice. He graduated from High School in Jersey City, Pre-Medicine in New York City and Medical School in Denver Colorado. Nicholas served in the Army Air Force during World War 11 and served two years in Europe and one year in the Pacific. He was discharged at the rank of Captain. He married Gladys H. Hedges in March of 1977 at Margate, Florida. She passed away in April of 2011. Dr. Rice worked at Riverside Hospital, Secaucus, N.J. and later was Health Officer for Villages of Glen Park, Chaumont, Three Mile Bay and Town of Lyme and Watertown retiring in 1984. He was a member of Chaumont Fire Dept. and Fire Police, Dexter Masonic Lodge #1072, Scottish Rite, American Legion Colon-Couch Post 821 of Clayton,Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lions Club, Elks Club of Watertown, Jefferson County Medical Assoc., NRA and Clayton Fire Police. He is survived by a son Joseph Rice of St. James, N.Y. and a daughter Elizabeth Gwiazdowski of Hillsborough, N.J. and a step-daughter Lois Wolden of Columbia, S.C. and 4 grandchildren. Dr. Rice will be cremated and there are no calling hours or funeral at this time. Donations may be made to Hospice of Jefferson County 1398 Gotham St. Watertown, N.Y. 13601. Arrangements are with Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter.
