Paul J. Mullen, 92 of County Route 53, Dexter passed away at his home Saturday April 11, 2015 surrounded by his family.
Paul was born May 10, 1922 in Watertown, the son of Francis A. and Elizabeth Cooper Mullen. He went to St. Patrick's School, Immaculate Heart Academy, Wadhams Hall, Ogdensburg, St. Bernard's, Rochester, Watertown School of Commerce, St. Lawrence Extension Collage Ctr., Remington Institute and the International Corresponding School for Highway Engineering.
His career began with Bradley Hardware in retail bookkeeping, John W. Charlebois Construction Co., Mullen and Reff Construction, and retired after 33 years from the NYS Dept. of Transportation with 27 years devoted to Traffic Engineering.
Paul married Helen C. Carraher on April 12, 1958 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Canton, N.Y.
He was a former Trustee at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Watertown, Scoutmaster Troop 11 of St. Patrick's Church from 1952-1953. In 1959 moved to Dexter and was appointed a Trustee of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, Dexter. In 1969 was Cub Master of Pack 55 Dexter, and helped establish a Parish Council for St. Elizabeth's Church. From 1969-1975 was President of that Parish Council in which time the interior of the church was completely renovated and the undercroft was renovated for two classrooms and a kitchen was installed. In 1978 he joined Frontier Housing Corp in an advisory capacity to the Board of Directors and later elected to Secretary of the Corporation. In 1981 he was selected as Engineer of the Year for Region 7 of the NYSDOT Engineers. In 1982 he and his wife Helen were made Honorary Members of the Dexter Fire Dept. where he was very active with Fire Dept. dinners and the Bullhead Feed. In 1986 they were selected as Citizen of the Year in the Village of Dexter.
Paul is survived by his wife Helen, and five children and their spouses: Martha and Michael Heise of Dexter, James and Rebecca Mullen of Port St. Lucie, FL., Michelle and Joseph Roukous of Dexter, Patrick and Diana Mullen of Watertown and Daniel and Wendy Mullen of Williamsburg, VA. He has 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by five siblings: Sister Mary Michael of St. Joseph's, Watertown, Francis Mullen, Lucille A. Mullen, and Bridget and Gertrude whom died shortly after birth.
A funeral mass will be conducted on WednesdayWednesday
at 11:00 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church of Brownville. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 6-8 P.M. on Tuesday at the Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter.
