Peter E. Gilmartin, 74, of 933 LeRay St., Watertown passed September 7, 2016 at the Samaritan Summit Village where he had resided the past two years.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Born on June 10, 1942 in Peekskill, NY son of Thomas and Mary A. (Kirkub) Gilmartin he attended school in Peekskill, NY.

He entered the US Army on March 16, 1961 and was stationed at Fort Drum, NY and he was honorably discharged on March 15, 1963 as a PFC. While stationed at Fort Drum he met Sylvia C. Conant of Watertown whom he married on May 11, 1963 at the Emmanuel Congregational Church in Watertown.  The couple resided in Watertown.  He then worked for NY AirBrake as a machinist for 38 years, retiring in 2001.

Mrs. Gilmartin worked at Jefferson County Department of Social Services for 18 years, retiring in 2004.

He was a member of the Black River American Legion. He loved cooking, going to garage sales and he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Among his survivors are his beloved wife of 53 years, Sylvia C. Gilmartin, Watertown; a son and daughter in law, Thomas W. and Issy H. Gilmartin, Watertownand three granddaughters, Amber, Angel and Ashleigh Gilmartin.

Two brothers, Thomas and Lee Gilmartin and two sisters, Rosemarie Chase and Lois Kazos passed before him.
