Obituary

Ray L. Leonard, age 101 of William St. Dexter passed away Tuesday evening at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown. Ray was born July 12, 1906 in the Town of Harrisville, the son of William J. and Nellie Blanchard Leonard. Ray graduated from Carthage High School and Canton ATC where he has been the oldest Alumni until his death. He married Marian E. Eveleigh on July 12, 1931 at the Dexter Methodist Parsonage by the Rev. Leslie Potter. The couple lived in Natural Bridge, West Carthage, and Pillar Point and moved into Dexter in 1944. He worked as a milk-tester in his early years in Jefferson County and then worked as a Division Head for Sears Roebuck of Watertown for eight years and then became Postmaster of Dexter until retiring October 31st, 1969. Ray was an 87 year member of Dexter United Methodist Church, he was also an 87 year member and oldest member of N.Y.State Grange, he was a 61 year member of Dexter Lodge 1072 Free and Accepted Masons and received the Dedicated Service Award in 2006, a member of Odd Fellows since 1927 joining in Dexter and currently member of Redwood Lodge of Odd Fellows and was the oldest living Odd Fellow in New York State, Dexter United Methodist Men's Club, Dexter Citizen of Year in 1989, former member of Sons of American Legion Smith-Savage Post 583, former member Frontier Housing Authority of Dexter, Canton Alumni. Funeral services will be held Saturday 2:00P.M. at the Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter. Officiating will be Rev. Russell Lee, retired minister and Rev. Helen Hadley pastor of Dexter United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery in the spring. Calling hours will be from 2-4 and 7-9 on Friday with a Masonic Service at 7:00 P.M. Friday. Donations may be made to Dexter United Methodist Church Budget Fund in lieu of flowers.
