Obituary

Raymond A. Goodrich, Lt. Col., U.S. Army retired, a lifelong resident of Sackets Harbor died September 29, 2010 at Samaritan Keep Home. Raymond was born in Sackets Harbor on October 22, 1917, the son of John L. and Della Green Goodrich. He attended and graduated from Sackets Harbor Central School in 1937. In April of 1941 Raymond enlisted in the US Army and was assigned to the Quartermaster Corps at Madison Barracks. In July 1942 he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant and during World War II served in the European Theatre. He participated in such campaigns as the Normandy Invasion, Northern France, Ardennes, Central Europe and the Rhineland while serving with the 524th Quartermaster Company. For his service he was awarded the European Campaign ribbon with 5 battle stars. Raymond was released from the military service in 1946 and returned to Sackets Harbor where he was employed with the Federal Government at Pine Camp (Fort Drum) and Staten Island while maintaining his reserve commission. On December 6, 1947 he married Shirley J. Orvis of Sackets Harbor. In April 1951, Raymond was recalled to active service and saw duty in such areas as Germany, Japan and Korea. He retired in 1966 from First Army Headquarters, Ft. Meade Maryland. Upon returning to Sackets Harbor, he was employed for a short time as Supervisor of the Jefferson County Motor Vehicle Bureau. Surviving besides his wife Shirley are his son Stephen and his wife Karen Ann, Sackets Harbor; three daughters and their husbands; Linda and William Edwards of Highlands North Carolina; Karen and Fred Nugent of Hagerstown Maryland; and Cynthia and Timothy FitzPatrick of Chaumont; 5 grandchildren; Jennifer Gilks, Matthew Nugent, Craig, Scott and Anthony Goodrich; 3 great grandchildren, Tyler and Benjamin Gilks, and MacKenzie Nugent; a sister Dorothy O'Brien of Edison New Jersey; and nieces and nephews. His brother Clark W. and sister Gladys Pelton died before him. Raymond was a member of the Retired Officers Association, American Legion post 1757, Past President of Lakeside Cemetery Association, Sackets Harbor Lions Club, and a member of the Sackets Harbor Masonic Lodge since 1939. He was an avid bowler, card-player and enjoyed gardening. A memorial service will be held Tuesday 1:00 P.M. at the Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter. Burial will be private at Lakeside Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Donations may be made to the Sackets Harbor Masonic Brotherhood Fund.
