Obituary

Richard C. Porter, 75, of 31127 Rutland Hollow Road, Black River, passed January 31, 2014 at Upstate Medical Hospital in Syracuse.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday,  Feb. 3 at the Bruce Funeral Home, Black River.

Burial will be at Sanford Corners Cemetery in the spring.

Calling hours are 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb.2 at the funeral home.

Born on September 27, 1938, in Black River, son of Carl Porter and Marion Jeffers, he attended Black River High School.

He married Doreen I. Gleason on February 2, 1957 at First United Methodist Church in Watertown.  The couple purchased the Porter Farm in 1961 which they owned and operated until selling to their son Randy in 1988.

Richard continued to operate a sugar bush in Rutland Hollow, two gravel and sand pits, raised beef cattle, pigs, and crops, and continued to help his son on the family farm.

He built Porter's Pond in Rutland Hollow which has held many weddings and family reunion's.  He was a member of the Champion Grange, received Citizen of the year in Champion, enjoyed snowmobiling, 4 wheeling, mopeding, shuffleboard, dancing, cutting wood, and working the land.  He was very creative and always had a building project going on.  He loved his family and animals.  Richard Porter was an honest and fair man loved by all.

Doreen passed February 10, 2004. On November 19, 2011 he married Jennifer L. Jennings of Black River at the family home.

Among his survivors are his wife Jennifer L. Porter, Rutland Hollow; four sons and two daughters in law, Ronald R. Porter and his companion, Karen Wills, Calcium, Randy C. and Elizabeth A. Porter, Rutland Hollow, Raymond S. and Tina Porter, Rutland Hollow, Roger G. Porter and his companion, Madison Seal, Black River; 8 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; two cousins and their wives, Thomas and June Eddy, James and Mae Eddy, Rutland Hollow; a cousin, Deborah Neher, Horseheads, NY; a brother in law and his wife, Kenneth and Cynthia Gleason, Black River; and his loving dog, Kaylee.

A son, Ricky K. Porter passed before him.
