Obituary

Robert L. Robl, 66, passed away August 21, 2014 at Samaritan Medical Center.  He was born September 17, 1947 in Watertown, New York, the son of Harold Wenzel Robl and Ruth Irene (Carroll) Robl. Calling hours will be 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home, Watertown. A firemen's prayer service will follow the visitation at the funeral home. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family. He attended Black River Elementary and graduated in 1966 from Carthage Central Jr. Sr. High.  While in school, Rob excelled at many sports, however he had a special passion for football. His love of football continued when he joined the Red & Black Football Team. While playing R&B he was number 68.  The team would enjoy an undefeated season in 1971. Rob joined the City of Watertown Fire Department on August 5, 1974.  He was promoted to Captain on September 25, 1989, retiring on September 19, 2009.  Rob spent his career on the Hook and Ladder Truck.  During his time at the Fire Department, he was respected by his peers for his work ethic, perseverance and courage. Prior to his firefighter career, Rob worked at Hartman Ice Company with Bob and Cecil Merchant, the Sno-Fun Shooting Preserve, and Russell Finch Tree Service where he enjoyed the "Good Times" with Frank Bango and Dick "Digger" Percy.  Roband his long time friend, and fellow fireman, Michael Green, formed G & R Construction. Rob had a great love for the outdoors.  He was an avid hunter, trapper and fisherman.  He was a man of many talents, which included creating stained glass lamps, carving duck decoys, logging, tree rigging, and woodworking. He married Joanne (Rankin) Johnson on June 8, 2002. In addition to his wife, Rob is survived by his mother, Ruth I. Robl, Ives Retirement Village, Watertown; Sister Carolyn S. Bridenstine and companion Gil Schugart of Black River; sister and brother in law Jane M. and Milton Sayre of Clayton; Four children: Christopher R. Robl, Sara L. Robl, Harold B. Robl, and Daniel W. Robl. Four stepchildren: Michael (Kazumi) Johnson, Jan (Jeffrey) Johnson, Jeffrey (Pogy) Johnson, and Denise Castner and her companion Bill Robertson; Two grandchildren: Jerryn Wade Peck and Katherine Ruth Robl; nephew and godson Brian  J. Bridenstine, and a niece, Laurie Bridenstine. There are also6 step-grandchildren and 1 step great-granddaughter, plus many beloved relatives from the Oshkosh, Wisconsin area. Rob was predeceased by his father, Harold W. Robl, in 1952, and a brother, Donald B. Robl, in 1946; also by his grandparents, Arthur C. & Clara H. (Gates) Carroll, Black River, and Wenzel & Viola (Poeschl) Robl, Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Rob was a past member of the Sons of American Legion, Watertown, NY, The Watertown Elks Lodge, Ducks Unlimited, the National Rifle Association, Fur Harvesters Association of Jefferson County, and the NYS Trapper's Association.
