Obituary

Rosemary L. Gardner, 82, Evans Road; died Wednesday morning at Samaritan Keep Home, Watertown. She had been a resident since January 11th. Mrs. Gardner worked at Grants Dept. Store after graduation where she met her late husband. She then was a homemaker until she returned to work in 1972 as one of the first employees at Howland Dept. Store, Watertown. She retired from Steinbeck Dept. Store in 1977. She had been the manager of several departments and a replacement for the store manager throughout her retail career. Born April 6, 1928 in Watertown, daughter of G. Edmund and Lenore E. Ritchie Burley. She graduated from Belleville Union Academy in 1947. She married Jack W. Gardner on August 29, 1948 at her parent's home in Mannsville. The couple lived in Brownville most of their married lives until moving to Evans Rd after retiring. Mrs. Gardner was a member of the Brownville United Methodist Church where she served many years as a Sunday School teacher, member of the choir, United Methodist Youth Fellowship advisor, and a member of the Brownville United Methodist Women. She also sat on the Memorial Committee. She was a Brownie and Jr. Girl Scout leader for several years. Surviving are two sons and their wives; John and Holly of Brownville, Craig and Amy of Vestal; a daughter and her husband Pamela and Timothy Scee of Brownville, a brother Joel Burleyof Spencerport, and two sisters, Betty Soffish and Joan McConnell of Johnson City, nine grandchildren four great grandchildren and several cousins, nieces and nephews. A great granddaughter predeceased her. Funeral services will be Saturday 2:00 P.M. at the Brownville United Methodist Church with Rev. Patricia Walz officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Adams in the spring. Calling hours will be from 1-2 P.M. at the church prior to the funeral service.
