Ruth F. Garvin, 90, passed Friday, May 27 at the Samaritan Summit Village where she had been a resident.
Calling hours will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 3 at the Bruce Funeral Home 131 Maple St., Black River.
A graveside service will take place 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4 at the Glenwood Cemetery.
Born on April 15, 1926 in Orwell, NY, daughter of Harold and Lillian (Bartlett) Stevens, she graduated from Sandy Creek High School in 1944 as the Salutatorian. Following school she attended the Watertown School of Commerce where she received a degree in business.
She married Gerald Garvin on July 17, 1947 at the Holy Family Rectory. The couple resided in Rutland where they owned and operated a farm up until 1973. Ruth then worked at the House of the Good Samaritan, part time for H&R Block and at Woolworths as a clerk. Following her retirement she spent many years helping raise and care for her grandchildren.
She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, word puzzles, cross word puzzles, Bingo and spending time with her grandchildren.
Among her survivors are five daughters and three sons in law, Mary Jo Garvin, Cape Vincent, Margaret and Herb Gould, Rutland, Kathleen "Fran" and Jerry Kirch, Black River, Rita Romeo and her companion, Gary Gruner, Carthage, Diane and Dennis Maltz, Springville, AL; a son, Gerald M. Garvin, Syracuse; 22 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Her husband Gerald passed June 18, 1987, a son, Patrick Garvin died in 2006 and three brothers, John, Fred and Cyrus Stevens also passed before her.
Donations may be made to the Rutland Fire Department or to the Black River Ambulance Squad.
