BLACK RIVER, N.Y. — Valerie A. Sayers Thompson, 70, of 30072 Route 3, Black River, NY, passed away Wednesday, April 22, at the Jefferson County Hospice Residence, Watertown, NY. A funeral Mass will be said 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 28, at St. Anthony's Church. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 27, at Hart & Bruce Funeral Home, 117 N. Massey St., Watertown. Born Oct. 17, 1944, in Middletown, CT, the daughter of Joseph H. and Evelyn A. Gagnon Sayers, she graduated in 1962 from Watertown Senior High School. She married Dale R. Thompson on Sept. 8, 1973, at the Woolworth United Methodist Church in Great Bend. The couple resided in Black River and enjoyed spending summers at their camp in Clayton, NY. Valerie worked for Beneficial Financial Group for 36 years, retiring in 2000. She returned to work in 2005 at Wal-Mart in the town of LeRay where she worked in the bakery department up until she became recently ill. Among her survivors are a daughter and son-in-law, Janelle L. and Christopher L. Pennington and their two daughters, Abigail and Madeline, all of Missouri City, TX; a step daughter and her husband, Valerie S. and Douglas J. Hasner, Depauville, NY and their two sons, James and Daniel Hasner; four sisters and three brothers in law, Joan and John Mitchell, Watertown, Sharon Yakunovich, Rutland, VT, Pamela and Carlos Escobar, Fort Worth, TX, Lisa and David Adams, Newport News, VA; several nieces and nephews. Valerie enjoyed visiting with her grandchildren, spending the holidays with her family, spoiling her dog, Katie and collecting unique teapots. Her husband passed June 20, 2003. A brother Joseph Sayers passed on Oct. 6, 2012. Donations may be made to Hospice of Jefferson County 1398 Gotham St. Watertown, NY 13601. Online condolences may be made at www.hartandbrucefh.com.
