Velma J. Wood, age 70 of Lakeview Drive, Dexter passed away Friday 2:00 P.M. at Samaritan Medical Center where she had been a patient since April 11th. Velma was born August 25, 1927 in Watertown, the daughter of Frank and Mabel Dow Jareo. She attended school at Watertown High and Immaculate Heart Academy. She married Leon A. Wood on November 21, 1944 in Watertown. She was a Bookkeeper at Robinson's Book Store in Watertown until retiring in 1990. She was a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church of Dexter, St. Elizabeth Seton Altar and Rosary Society, President of K of C. Chapter 7598 Auxilry for seven years, St. Elizabeth Seton Choir, the Bereavement Committee, Dexter Senior Citizens, and Brownville Busy B.G.'s. She is survived by her husband Loren and four children and their spouses. Bruce and Linda Wood of Hampton, VA., David and Diane Wood of Gouverneur, Michael and Rene Thompson of Watertown and Bruce and Dawn Gibson of Evans Mills. She also has 14 grandchildren, 18 gr. Grandchildren nieces and nephews. A brother Claude Jareo of Clayton and a sister Edna Bergevin of Watertown also survive. She was predeceased by sisters Francis Brassard and Maude Jareo. A funeral mass will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Church of Brownville with Fr. Kevin O'Brien, pastor officiating. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery. Calling hours will be Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 at the Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter. Donations may be made to St. Elizabeth Seton Altar and Rosary Society or the Arthritis Foundation.
