Vernon F. Mitchell, age 85 of County Rte 53 died Wednesday morning at Mercy Health Care. Vernon was born February 4, 1926 in Dexter the son of Clinton and Mildred Chapman Mitchell. He graduated from Dexter High School and entered the Army in May of 1944. He served in the Rhineland where he received the Combat Infantry Badge and Purple Heart. He was discharged in 1946. Vernon married Ola M. Yott on August 7, 1949 at the Presbyterian Church of Dexter. Ola passed away February 11, 2010. Vernon worked at N.Y. Air Brake where he was stock clerk until he retired in 1965. He was a life-member of Smith Savage Post 583 Dexter, V.F.W. and D.A.V. of Watertown, Dexter Fire Dept. and Fire Police and Lil Angels Snowmobile Club of Dexter. Vernon is survived by children: Michael and Darlene Mitchell Sr. of Dexter, Sharon and Steve Sagriff of Tallahassee, Florida, Steven Mitchell of Lakeport, N.Y. and Penny and Darrel Fitzgerald of Dexter. He has six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, a sister Dorothy Rosiere of S. Carolina. He was predeceased by daughter-in-law Kamay and grandchildren Steve Jr. and Hannah Mitchell, brothers Clarence and Carl Mitchell. Funeral services will be Saturday 11:00 a.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery with Military Honors. Calling hours will be Friday from 5-8 P.M.
