Obituary

Virginia Katherine (Donohue) Carson, 92, formerly of 8150 Black River Road (27468 NYS Rte 3), Watertown, NY, passed away May 22, 2016 at the Samaritan Keep Nursing Home where she had been a resident for several years.

Calling hours will be 1 to 3 p.m., Thursday, May 26 at the Bruce Funeral Home, 131 Maple St., Black River.

The funeral service will be 3 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Bruce Chapman officiating.  Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery.

She was born on December 2, 1923 in Rockland, Maine, the daughter of Francis Thomas and Marian Frances (Parsons) Donohue.  The family moved to Deferiet, NY, when she was 12.  She graduated from Carthage High School.

After school, she worked for the New York Telephone Co., eventually becoming a service observer until 1960.  During WWII, she worked as an operator in Geneva, NY.  She married William B. Carson, Jr., on May 16, 1948 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Watertown.  She became a homemaker after the birth of her first son, still working part-time during the summers as a telephone operator at Fort Drum for a number of years.

Mr. Carson worked at the New York Telephone Co. from 1948 until he retired in 1985 as a supervisor.  He passed away February 23, 2000.

She enjoyed refinishing old furniture; she loved colonial-style architecture and furniture, the Bible, birds, reading, and sewing.  She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Black River.

Among her survivors are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Mark R. Carson, New Bremen, NY, and Brian T. Carson (Dr. Catherine R. Rodland), Northfield, MN; three grandchildren, Lori Christine (Carson) Coats, Weedsport, NY, John W.R. Carson and Catherine E.R. Carson, of Northfield, MN. A brother, Richard Keith Donohue, also passed away before her.

The family would like to thank the staff of the sixth floor of the Samaritan Keep Home for their wonderful care of Virginia, particularly in her last hours.
