Alice Young Obituary

Alice Elizabeth Jones Young, 100, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2021 at the Samaritan Keep Nursing Home where she had been a resident.

She was born on April 2, 1920 in the Town of Wilna, daughter of Ralph J. and Rose M. (Wilcox-Jonas) Jones. While attending high school she worked at Fox’s Drug Store in Carthage. Alice graduated from Augustian Academy, Carthage, NY on June 19, 1938, 2nd in her class of 32 with a Regents diploma.

She married Clarence T. Young on April 10, 1938  in Gouverneur and the couple lived in several places in northern New York State including  Champion, Lewisburg (now Fort Drum), Great Bend, Deer River, Castorland, West Carthage, Copenhagen, Evans Mills.  She and her family also lived in Great Bend, Kansas. 

Alice was a homemaker and a farm wife. She and her husband owned and operated several dairy farms over the years and the last dairy farm they owned was in Evans Mills.  When her husband passed away in 1980 their sons took over the family farm.

Alice enjoyed cooking, sewing, crocheting, painting, reading, writing; she loved music and frequenting farmer’s markets & auctions.

Over the years she was a member of St. James’ Catholic Church, Carthage; St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Copenhagen; St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Evans Mills, where she taught religious education classes to children and led chapters of the Legion of Mary and Junior Legion of Mary.  Alice also traveled extensively as a promoter for Catholic pilgrimages through Regina Tours.

Among her survivors are her eight children and their spouses, Thomas G. (Vera) Young , James R. (June) Young, Judith C. Eisel , William C. Young, Robert C. (Ferne) Young, Mary A. (Fred) Bruyns, Christina H. (Richard) Dorr, Daniel H. (Kerry) Young; 20 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, 16 great-great grandchildren; 12 nieces and nephews, 26 great nieces & nephews, 26 great-great nieces & nephews and 7 great-great-great nieces & nephews.

Besides her parents she is predeceased by her husband Clarence T. Young; a son Edwin R. Young; great-granddaughter Whitney B. Young; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Thelma Jones and Elma R. (Harry) Pickel; a brother, Norman W. Jones, and a niece Jean E. Pickel.

The family would like to thank  the staff and providers on the 7th floor of the Samaritan Keep Nursing Home for their compassion and care given to their mother.  

Arrangements are with the Bruce Funeral Home, Black River.  

A Funeral Mass will be held in the spring at the St. James Catholic Church in Carthage.  Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery.
